MTV: Ruining Generations to Come

The other day, my husband and I were discussing something, and the topic of MTV came up. The only thing that we watch on MTV these days is the Challenges between Real World and Road Rules people. We still love these shows even if they are a bit fake, and not real reality. We really enjoy the physical aspect of the show, and the challenges they show.

This got me thinking, MTV has gone severely downhill since I used to watch it as a kid/teen. Back then I watched Daria, Beavis and Butthead, Real World, TRL, and actual music videos. What do kids watch on MTV now? Engaged and Underage, Teen Pregnancy, My Supersweet 16, Jersey Shore, and so many more horrid shows. Even Real World has gone downhill in my opinion, it's the same exact cast every time, there's always like three guys, three girls, maybe one more of each, one gay person, one black person, one shy girl, one promiscuous girl, and meaty guy, one shy guy, etc. It doesn't feel that real anymore. What are these shows teaching the kids that watch them religiously? That it's okay to act like a brat, because you are rich and have parents that give you anything. Also that it's okay to value money, material items, and breaking the law for your 16th birthday? The engaged and pregnant tv shows are driving me insane. Why are we putting these irresponsible kids on these tv shows? What does that show the real kids, that it's okay to get engaged or pregnant as a teen because then you'll get a tv show? I think not! Also, where have the music videos gone? Why don't they show those anymore? As an artist, I would think that the video would be an important part of the song, and that it should be shown to the public. Doesn't MTV stand for music televison? haha

I think that MTV's shows have gotten worse and worse over the years, and are contributing to the degradation of the next generation of kids in America. They are losing values, morals, a grip on reality itself, and in my opinion they are losing role models. No longer do young men and women look up to authors, inventors, important historical figures, no, now they look up to Ke$ha, and Lady GAGA, Lindsay Lohan, The Situation, and others who are not really people to look up to in my opinion. Music is definitely a wonderful thing in this world, but we have strayed too far from its purpose.

What can we do? I'm asking you, as a parent, a sibling, a cousin, or a friend, what can we do about these new generations that seem to be lost?

Book # 38 Water for Elephants

Thanks to a co-worker who lent me the book, and friends and family that told me how amazing this book was, I finally read, Water for Elephants , by Sara Gruen. I have been hearing rave reviews from friends, family, coworkers, online sites, and other blogs about this book, and I have to say that I agree whole-heartedly. This is a wonderful book about love, life, the circus, and how connected people can become with each other and animals in such a short time. It's a stunning tale of the carnival and circus people of a time long ago, and how their lives revolved around the circus, the performers, the workmen, the animals, and the crowds. I loved all the characters in this book, and it was really interesting going from the past to the present with the main character. The love between Marlena and Jacob is so wonderful, and pure that it's a great part of this book. I also love how involved and invested Jacob becomes with the animals and some people in the circus. Book # 19

Today I had a day off, so I spent my day cleaning my apartment, listening to christmas music, catching up on shows, and the best of all, reading. I started and finished the 18th book, Something Like Fate  by Susane Colasanti. Another wonderful book from the warehouse book sale. This is by far my favorite of the three Colasanti books that I own, and have read recently. This is a book that really shows the reality of high school: the pressures, the people, the attitudes, the cruelty, the mocking, the relationships, and the hardness. I remember high school and how easy it was for someone to ruin another person's reputation with a few words that might not even be true. That's what happens in this book, Lani and Erin are best friends and then Erin starts dating Jason. Although, Jason and Lani are pretty much soul mates for high school anyways.
